How to Choose the Right Sieve Set
Start with the standard your customer or auditor asks for. ASTM, BSS and ISS number their meshes differently, so a "100 mesh" on one chart is not the same as on another. Check the micron opening, not just the mesh number. That's where most mix-ups happen.
Then pick the frame. Brass is the classic choice for fine powders. Stainless steel handles wet sieving and harsher materials. GI frames suit coarse work like soil and aggregate, where you care more about budget than a mirror finish.

What are standard test sieves used for?
Standard test sieves separate particles by size so you can run a particle size analysis. Labs use them for grain analysis, powder sieving, soil testing, coal testing and fractionation. Pharma companies, research institutes and universities all rely on them to check that a material meets its size specification before it moves on.
How do I read a BSS sieve size chart?
A BSS sieve size chart lists the sieve number next to the opening in microns and millimetres. Find your target particle size in microns, then read across to the matching BSS, ASTM or ISS number. For example, a 75 micron opening is ASTM 200. Always confirm the micron value, because mesh numbers differ between standards.
What is the BSS to micron conversion?
There's no single formula. Each BSS number has a fixed opening size, so you read it from the chart. Our sieve tables show BSS, ASTM and ISI numbers with micron and mm values side by side, from 4.75 mm down to 25 microns. Tell us the micron size you need and we'll confirm the right sieve.
Which frame material should I choose: brass, SS or GI?
Brass suits fine powders and general lab work. Stainless steel (SS 304) is better for wet sieving and tougher materials. GI frames work for coarse materials like soil and aggregate at lower cost. We make all three, with wire mesh in customized microns, in round, square or rectangular shapes.
What diameters do you supply?
Brass and SS frame sieves come in 100 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm, 500 mm and 600 mm diameters. Small test sieves start at 2 inches and go up to 6 inches, with a collection pan and lid. Square and rectangular frames are also available, and we make customized sizes on request.
Are your laboratory test sieves calibrated?
Yes. Our ASTM standard sieves are calibrated from a NABL laboratory in Delhi, India. Every order can include a calibration test report, validation documents and a traceability certificate. Each sieve also carries marking of microns in ASTM, ISS and BSS, so your auditor can see the details at a glance.
Will your sieves fit my sieve shaker?
Most likely. Our sieves are designed for motorized shakers, electromagnetic and gyratory sieve shakers, Rotap sieve shakers and vibro sifters.
